Relationship building can take time and it starts with trust What steps are you taking to build trust with you client? Be open and curious with them. Take an interest in them and what they care about. Acknowledge with them that change takes courage and create a safe and confidential space, guiding them and showing compassion. What works for me is integrating mindful practices in the session.

My Experience with such client outside trying to first create a safe and friendly atmosphere void of judgements will be to use the tool of "story telling". Finding stories around point of interest and discussing the lessons there in can help a client to start to find themselves in the picture of the conversations you have having. It helps to break walls that they seemingly have built up.
