Numbers don't lie, but you can lie with numbers. Be careful in the way information is presented itself and the way others organized it as there could always be a gap that deprives you from seeing the entire picture. Of course there would be never be an easy answer on how much should we trust entirely on numbers, you should always look up to consider a holistic approach when addressing team performance and plans to boost their careers or define a performance improvement plans.

In my opinion the only way a team could possibly struggle is if everybody isn’t working on their assigned task as efficiently as possible. Which is why, it’s important to assign tasks according to a persons capabilities not their past record. It is also important to slowly challenge the person to do better in the given field, but it’s not possible in one day.

#1: Context matters. It matters in terms of securing data quality, and it matters for how you interpret the data once collected. If your team is fearful of how the data will be used, what’s their incentive for not making everything “green” or gaming the system to get the best possible marks? It won’t give your team nor the company any real value going down that path. Hence: secure the quality of your data before making any conclusions. #2: Recognise industry standards and apply what works for your context. As an engineering manager, I love DORA metrics. But those metrics aren’t worth anything to me, the individuals in my team, nor our team and company as a whole without #1 being secured first.

If this is the case, the changing face of customers needs to be factored into KPIs. The data from sales and marketing departments is important when setting KPIs, and these should be realistic so as not generate burnout.
