Once you get a brief about a new project or program, being assigned to you take a step back to understand about the client, the nature of the program, and who will it impact the most. This holistic understanding about the program goal, nature of business and stakeholder profile will lay the foundations to build further on. I generally start with an overview map which outlines the above mentioned datapoints. I then superimpose it with a timeline, highlighting goals, milestones and deliverables. This holistic map, can tremendously help in define a granular project/ program plan.

Program management is nothing but the multiple projects having same portfolio / scope and having the common objective ... First you need to know about the program objectives... Once the objective is clear and defined make a execution plan consisting of why/how/when/where/whom... Once you defined the above execution plan .. chalk out the project schedule and the skills required to complete that task with qualified resources .. Form a team and clearly define the objective of the project/program. Once the team is align with goal start and monitor the project with proper progress reports and mitigation plan Place a proper change order methodology Once should not do gold plating as the objective is already defined

Yes this IS important and NEEDED, because you need time to assess, compile and understand the loads of information you receive in tons. My daily sequencing goes like 2-1-3 during weekly or bi weekly meetings and shifts to 1-3-2 during steering committee or leadership fortnightly meetings. 1) Always have an agenda. Either to publish information or receive it. 2) State the topic of prominence 3) Expectations from the session and stakeholders 4) Goal of the session or meeting And once the meet is done, summarize in the sequence of the above mentioned points.

Program Managers need to be effective storytellers. Every minute, your program gathers some data and soon it can become overwhelming. People don't want to see raw data; they prefer to see insights & this is where you can add value. For example, one of your stakeholders may be wondering 'When will this launch?
