You’re starting a new industrial design project. What laser cutting software do you need to know?

If you are a professional designer using any commercial CAD software, you will have the foundation for exporting into any industrial laser cutting software. The big difference is in how far you must go converting the design document to one that suits the laser cutting software. Some are able to read native 3D sheet metal models, creating the requisite flattened 2D file. In most cases, 3D models will need to be flattened into a 2D profile before exporting. While vector graphics software can be used to create cutting paths, CAD programs produce higher accuracy and dimensional reliability.

The software I came across most frequently were CorelDRAW and Illustrator. In most cases, I prepared the file in Illustrator and then imported it to CorelDRAW to do the laser cutter job. There are also some fantastic 3D tools like SolidWorks and Rhino in which you can create 2D outline drawings that you can use.

In the majority of cases, vector graphics profiles are used for consumer grade or entry level laser cutting equipment. Industrial and commercial cutters read 2D CAD files, generally in .dxf format. Setting of cutting parameters range greatly from machine to machine, material being cut, and laser system in use. The process of converting the design file to a cut path varies by machine and the software it reads. Most generic laser cut software will not operate industrial cutters, not do industrial cutters export files readable by lower end economy cutters. To this end, the entire process, from design to post processing, must be considered as a serial operational path, and software selected that suits the equipment in use.

What helped me decide which CAD software to use was to define the purpose of the 3D model. - Is it a quick and dirty mockup to test different variants? In this case, I used Rhino or SolidWorks to prototype quickly. - Should it be a polished 3D model that can be used for 3D printing? Autocad, Catia, or SolidWorks were some solid choices here. - Is the 3D model going to be used for animation and fancy renderings later? Then I opted for software like Blender, Maya, and Cinema4D which offer an amazing array of options.

All CAD software comes with a feature to export .DXF files. However, after exporting, open the file in a software like AutoCAD or Adobe Illustrator and check for line continuity. Some CAD software like Fusion 360 does not generate continuous paths, hence can cause problems with laser cutting with the fabricating. All fabricators prefer continuous paths. Use the join command in these software to join the disconnected lines and make them continuous. Also, these softwares give an option to add colour to specific paths to differentiate between "through-cut" and "etching" so that it's easier for the fabricator. This feature is not present in some CAD software.

.DXF files are similar to .SVG files in the fact that they are "unit-less". These files are vector files and they do not contain the unit of measurement (inches or mm) within the file. Hence, when exporting make sure that you and the fabricator use the same units of measurement.

Consideration must be given to every step in the process from idea to finished part. Laser cutting can be as simple as importing a graphic line drawing into a simple machine that converts and automatically controls laser operation from simple input parameters for cutting a single part. On the other end of the spectrum is large laser systems that utilize proprietary post process software that creates ganging of parts for sheet utilization, stages cut jobs, and feeds materials in and out - requiring specialized training. It is critical to understand every step of the operation, your project needs, budget constraints, available space, and operational expertise, before making any purchasing decisions.
