To succeed in an entry-level accounting position, here are details you should focus on 1- You must understand basic accounting principles such as double-entry bookkeeping. 2- You should learn accounting software Consider getting certified if possible. 3- You must be precise in your work, as accounting requires precision and attention to detail. 4- You must communicate and work collaboratively with your coworkers to fill any knowledge gaps you need. 5- You must adapt and be willing to learn, as the field of accounting is constantly evolving. By focusing on these skills you will be on your way to success in your entry-level accounting position! What I've discovered to be beneficial is cultivating a curious mindset, embracing a willingness to learn, and maintaining a strong work ethic. Accounting is just not about juggling the debit/credit, spend/received or assets/liabilities under GAAP or IFRS, it’s mostly about communicating with respective persons. Communication is one of the most important skills to be an Accountant.

Being able to explain complex concepts in simple, ducky and bunny terms to people who need to understand and make a decision is gold. It's really tough to do. Practice at it. A few things to keep in mind: 1) Analyze your audience with regard to the message. 2) Use the IBM method for memos (tell them what you're going to tell them, tell them in some detail, and finish with telling them what you told them. 3) Use pictures and graphs as much as possible (not complex spreadsheets). 4) If you are going to use a bullet chart, keep the chart to five points and use only five worlds per point (they are focus points for you to talk to). 5) Give the audience the time to ask questions (pulling information out of you) and don't overwhelm them.

I would also add that team work with IT and operations are important as well. IT helps to understand the architecture how data are flowing and knowledge of operations help to make the understanding how amounts are coming to accounting.

Although many colleagues often see accounting dept. as a real party killer to the business, as a real asset to the company any good accountant should possess the qualities of a manager, even being in a starting position. You should encourage people to collect receipts, motivate them to be financially responsible in terms of budgeting, and set yourself as an example of punctuality (especially when it comes to salary payouts :) Therefore, I admire problem-solving accountants. It's up to you how you would like to develop this skill - would you like to dig into analysis and get the answers from numbers, or to improve your soft skills and cooperate more in order to get things done.

There is always a dilemma: trust in people and scepticism. Trust but always check. Believe but always request evidence. Evidence is important to match anomalies with expected result from operations

Being curious is one of the biggest tools for succeeding not just at entry level, but at every level for me. Ask questions, but make sure you research and investigate first. Ask the question when you've not been able to find the answer yourself, or to confirm that the answe you've found is the correct one. People asking without having tried to find their own solution (or proposed solution) is one of the most frustrating things for me. That skill of being curious will take you a long way to success in your career.

I find it's always good to have a professional, focused attitude to the job or task in hand. Don't be afraid to try something and make mistakes, so long as you learn from those mistakes. It's also important that managers allow you to use your own initiative and actively encourage you to do so. Feedback should be positive and should focus on the weakness and how one can improve. Listening to feedback and constructive criticism should be considered important as it will help you to learn and gain valuable experience. Also, good, hard, honest work usually goes a long way. You need to show willingness and enthusiasm to your managers.

Theory is very different from practice and having a teachable spirit during the early days of your career will go a long way.

At entry-level, you need a sane mind that can observe how things work practically. You will get instructions that might not make sense to you or is in conflict with what you know so far. Don’t beat yourself up if you can’t figure things out. Give yourself some time and it will start to make sense.

I have found one more thing very essential these days to succeed at any position, that an employee should always try to find the way to somehow automate the process he/she is working on. And also add some value to the existing process. If someone is getting pre-existing work in a certain position, he/she should add some values to that process before passing it to others (either before moving to another process or leaving the org.). Anyone can work on the pre-existing process with the fixed steps of doing it. What matters is that you can somehow give your inputs to the process to improve it.

A person with the right attitude will only require a conducive environment and supportive ecosystem to pave the path for himself and deliver.
