The understanding of the "why" is the most crucial step to a successful career in Consulting. Our clients pay a lot of money, so we shouldn't waste it by producing meaningless content. Each research task, each calculation, each slide has a single purpose: To help our clients find answers to their stated (and unstated, but implied) questions. Therefore, it is important to understand why a task is necessary and how it contributes to the purpose. Sometimes, details matter. Other times, the big lines are in focus. Another time, a threat out of leftfield needs to be highlighted. If you develop an understanding for when to choose which approach, you will find it a lot easier to come up with high-quality work that adds value for your clients.
