As I embark on my career journey in this field, I recognize the crucial need for a robust understanding of network security protocols and encryption techniques to navigate the digital highways safely and securely.

Telematics Systems: Trucks and fleets often rely on telematics systems for tracking, diagnostics, and route optimization. These systems can be vulnerable to cyberattacks that manipulate data, disrupt communication, or disable tracking capabilities. Supply Chain Attacks: The transportation sector heavily relies on a complex supply chain for parts and maintenance. Hackers could target these supply chains to introduce vulnerabilities into vehicles or software updates, potentially impacting a large number of vehicles at once.

Penetration Testing (Pen Testing): This technique involves simulating a cyberattack to identify exploitable vulnerabilities. Pen testers act like malicious actors, attempting to gain unauthorized access to systems and data. This proactive approach uncovers vulnerabilities before attackers can find them. Promoting a culture where cybersecurity is seen as a COLLECTIVE responsibility is equally important; it fosters an environment where individuals feel empowered to report security incidents without fear of repercussion, and where continuous learning and improvement in cyber practices are encouraged.

This has to be a top to bottom approach. Ensure that senior leaders and executives understand the importance of cybersecurity and actively support and promote a culture of security throughout the organization. Develop comprehensive cybersecurity policies that outline expectations and guidelines for employees covering areas such as password management, data handling and encryption, incident response, and reporting protocols. With the rise of connected and autonomous vehicles, vehicle cybersecurity has emerged as a distinct and critical skill set. My involvement in projects related to vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications and autonomous vehicle systems necessitated expertise in securing vehicle software, protecting against vehicle hacking, and ensuring the integrity of vehicle communication systems. This includes knowledge of automotive industry standards such as ISO/SAE 21434 and best practices for vehicle cybersecurity. My work on projects involving the collection and processing of personal data, such as passenger information systems, highlighted the critical importance of data privacy and protection.

While the focus is often on technical skills in cybersecurity, the importance of soft skills shouldn't be underestimated. The ability to communicate complex security concepts to non-technical stakeholders, work collaboratively across departments, and lead teams is increasingly valuable. As cybersecurity becomes more integrated into overall business strategies, professionals who can navigate these interdisciplinary demands will stand out!
