As a chemical engineer, I would gauge my proficiency by actively seeking feedback on various aspects of my work. In my industry experience Chemical Engineers work in teams. That includes sharing ideas on Safety with formal Process Hazards Reviews and critical equipment upgrades with what we called New & Altered Inspections. Included in these reviews would be Engineers from another area or production process who may come up with a different viewpoint based on what they have seen in their practice. The best approach is to realize that it's not your chemical engineering ability that's at stake, but rather an opportunity to be sure that what you have come up with as a team meets the highest standards. These formal reviews are documented and published in safety reviews and shared company-wide. Other ongoing team reviews happen to share experiences.

I agree with this outline of the motivational aspects of performance reviews. In your early career these reviews are generally on a six-month interval, and constructive. Focusing on the things that you are doing well and things that you might do better with more training. My chemical engineering experience began in a technical group in a Polymer Products Manufacturing facility, and this provided a great opportunity to go out and tour the manufacturing plant on a daily basis and see areas where you can make an impact in quality, cost savings, and safety. It was a great opportunity to interact with the different groups including manufacturing and maintenance. I also enjoyed the opportunity to provide 24 hour technical support.

I became a production supervisor at a large manufacturing plant and it was very important to gain new skills. You are also going to need other people to be specialized in new areas of responsibility. One of my direct reports was named Jake. He had the lowest performance ranking out of thirty other people. My new position included the wastewater treatment plant. I needed to take a week long class at UNC Chapel Hill and I took Jake with me. We studied hard and both passed the test. Jake got a 98% and his performance everywhere went way up.
