You're about to start a new job. How can you make the most of your first week?

As a superior of a team, I really like to see if a new team member take an extra initiative to learn and communicate with the existing team member. It is normal to ice breaking with the new team member, but having a new team member who know how to start a conversation first and show an interest on learning should be a very good lead to a better team work. In my experience, I will start to communicate and study on the project delegated by my superior and start the ice breaking by initiate some conversation first. But bare in mind, we shouldn’t overspend our welcome and just nice to let people know we are warm to be interact with.

To optimize your first week, it's important to establish meaningful connections with peers and other stakeholders. Effective leadership in the workplace is rooted in strong relationships, clear communication, and collaborative teamwork. Additionally, it's crucial to remain vigilant and attentive to cultural nuances while focusing on absorbing new information. While you may have innovative ideas for improving processes, it's advisable to defer implementation until you better understand your surroundings.

During my first week, I prioritize building relationships by actively engaging with colleagues and seeking opportunities to connect. I familiarize myself with company policies, procedures, and expectations to hit the ground running. Asking questions and seeking clarification when needed demonstrates my eagerness to learn and contribute. I aim to observe and absorb as much information as possible while remaining open to feedback and adapting to new challenges. Finally, setting clear goals and priorities for the week helps me stay focused and productive from day one.

New job, new plant, new location and new community...Many people underestimate the need to go through the manuals/drawings of plant area, machinery and equipment, the type of operations routine. When you enter into a plant with a team you will quickly relate with the knowledge you gained from manuals. This initiative will have great mileage.

Building relationships can do wonders to your learning process. Apart from thorough reading of manuals, you have to hit the shop floor, be with the shop floor team to gain valuable real time experience of plant machinery. The more you pick an experience from a shop floor the better the performance will be.

If you are part of the plant team ensure you do not repent later for being stuck at your desk preparing reports, reporting is an essential part of recording and updating the daily routine but if you become a desk worm you are surely going to valuable shop floor experience that is core to your manufacturing experience. Ensure you make 4 to 6 shop floor visits per day. Take stock of planned productivity and ensure smooth running.
