You're a software developer in the late stages of your career. How can you keep up with new technologies?

This is such a poor question. I’ve developed software for over 40 years. Everything, EVERYTHING, has always been changing. The best way to keep up has always been to learn, continuously. It’s not harder than that.

This mindset that we in tech need to put more effort into new technologies than absolutely everyone else is false. There are still devs working waterfall in Cobolt and there are devs working on cutting edge AI model and robots. Long career doesn't mean you can't keep up, it just means you know what you want tofocus on and what you can safely ignore, instead of jumping on every new trend out there. Through technology we change entire industries every day, the people working in those industries need to keep up with the new technology we bring out. As developers we are already interested in technology. Many of the people of whom we change their everyday working life couldn't care less about tech and just wants to get their work done.

It depends on the personal commitment, the new development platform/languages are easier than predecessor. There is so much available in latest tools and on internet for one to quickly learn. Experienced people can quickly relate to prior experience and can learn a new skill in less than 2 weeks. At the same time, if a person is not fully committed to learn (which can happen at any age), he may need more time.

To become a software developer you already have a growth mindset, NOTHING is set in stone, every project is different, even language features change, you are essentially best at what you learned from the project you last worked on. You will have consistently adopted new technologies, challenged yourself to learn, these are the prerequisites of being a developer, if you have made it to the late stages of your career, then you have embraced the requirements and successfully integrated them into your mindset.

Most of the new trends in technology, like AI and ML etc will have applications in the existing technology stack that you are already working on. For example : 1. An update in the IDE could use AI to write better code. 2. a new library could help you implement new features that were not possible earlier. To stay current, it's best to start by following your existing interests and then apply new knowledge to those interests. It can be challenging to learn and adapt to a completely new technology, so expanding within your existing domain first can make the process easier. This way, you can learn and grow while exploring new areas that interest you.

I think the author meant to phrase the question: how can you help younger software developers keep up to date? This is especially so given the poor state of university graduates. This isn't just a poor question, it's offensive and ageist because it assumes that older experienced software developers are somehow less capable with modern technology. Shameful!
