Low light photography can be challenging, but also rewarding. It can create dramatic, moody, and creative images, but it also requires careful planning and preparation. In this article, we'll share some tips on how to shoot in low light and what to consider before you press the shutter.
The first step is to assess the light conditions and decide what kind of effect you want to achieve. Do you want to capture the natural ambient light, or add some artificial light sources? Do you want to freeze the motion, or create some blur or trails? Do you want to emphasize the contrast, or balance the exposure? Depending on your goals, you'll need to adjust your camera settings and equipment accordingly.
Maybe this is an obvious thing to say, but you need to simulate and practice this scenario before you are on a paid shoot for a client. The day before the shoot, in your family room, turn off the lights, shut the blinds, turn on one lamp. Heck, turn on a flashlight. Get out your gear and experiment. What is your shutter speed? ISO? F-stop? How can you work with the existing light(s)? Is your camera's sensor good enough with the lamp? Do you need extra light? Will 1 LED light fill in the scene? Take your photos and look at them in Lightroom. Is there too much grain? You need to walk onto the set the next day with a plan of attack in your head and the confidence to use your tools (camera, lights) effectively.
Not long ago, shooting in low light conditions required adding considerable artificial light. Today, very little light is needed to capture a beautiful image. Modern technology not only allows for far less light, but also can fill in darker areas of the scene through high dynamic range (HDR) processes. HDR goes beyond the camera just being able to expose deeper into shadows, it can now automatically merge different exposure settings into one single image. These advances can greatly mitigate the need for additive light. One of the most impressive examples of HDR is modern smartphones.
I'd ideally use a prime lens with a wider aperture (f/1.8, f/1.4, etc.) to allow more light to reach the sensor. If I don't have a prime lens, I'll adjust the aperture on my zoom lens to its widest setting.
the best things happen when I am on an actual shoot and it seems like things are going wrong - may go wrong or went wrong -for example I was shooting at a combination company party and the glass tempering functions of this company's manufacturing plant in Brooklyn - the Mayor of New York City (Mayor Koch) and various other celebrities and clients of this company (Colonial Mirror and Glass) were there and I left the party area - went to shoot the actual process of the glass being tempered in the tempering machine really close up and the glass being processed shattered- I felt a blast of heat coming from this machine like I had never felt before but I kept on shooting and the next piece of glass was moved in and I got the shot I wanted

The second step is to choose the right gear for low light photography. Shoot in RAW format. Your photos can be a bit underexposed but the RAW data will be enough to save it in post-production if needed. Shooting JPEG will have limits to how far you can raise the exposure of the image, but in RAW you can usually raise the exposure several stops.
As a professional photographer, all the camera bodies I use are excellent at coping with low light. To make the most of the situation I would choose a lens with a low f stop, ideally f2.8 or lower to allow maximum light to hit the sensor. I might also decide to use flash depending on the situation and subjects
Low light will always need a good camera with less noise, prime less will also get good photos even the 50 1.8 lens if used correctly.
Apart from using a semi-professional camera with a manual setting, you’d need a fast lens that can open up the aperture as much as possible, so at least f/2.0, but f/1.8 or even f/1.2 is recommended. Another thing that can be of great help is a monopod. By using a monopod, you can minimise camera movement, therefore utilising slower shutter speeds in your camera. A monopod allows you to be more flexible than a tripod in terms of moving around, this is even more useful if shooting with a telephoto lens, as it keeps the camera still.
for low light, having full frame body with big apperture always come in handy. Just make sure to avoid heavy noise as this will be frustrating
The third step is to set your exposure for low light photography. You'll need to balance three factors: aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Aperture controls how much light enters your lens, shutter speed controls how long your sensor is exposed to light, and ISO controls how sensitive your sensor is to light. Generally, you'll want to use a wide aperture, a slow shutter speed, and a high ISO, but you'll also need to consider the depth of field, the motion blur, and the noise level. You can use the exposure triangle as a guide, or use the exposure compensation feature to fine-tune your exposure.
I agree… decrease aperture increase shutter speed to start. I like moving around the space taking test shots to see what the adjustments look like and it gives me the opportunity to see if I still need to make any changes.
Always keep in mind, make sure shutter are doubled from your lense focal length, ie 50mm=100s. Minimum shutter speed to avoid blured focus images especially when shooting without a tripod
When I was a nightlife photographer shooting in the dark with flash, I always shot at 1/6 shutter speed with a steady hand and obtained crisp images because the flash would freeze the subject. This also allows a lot of ambient light to fill the image so you get very saturated images rather than a black backdrop behind the subject. However when you have people moving onstage where no flash can be used, you will need to increase your ISO and use the widest aperture/lowest fstop such as 2.8 so that you can increase your shutter speed to freeze stage motion with no flash.

You can also use the magnify or zoom feature on your camera to check your focus accuracy.
When working in dark lit situations on a regular basis, it is helpful to have lenses with a focus scale, to help with manual focussing. Also a flashlight with which to light objects in the desired focus range can be very helpful. Some Mirrorless camera lens combinations have options to let you see the actual focus distance on screen.
While manual focus are better option, but keep in mind when working with bigger apperture like f1.2 or f1.4, the focus depth are so thin. Small movement will let you out of focus.

Learning to focus is vital in low light. A single mm back or forth can make or break the image. Learning focusing techniques such as selective focus one can improve the quality of the image. Perspective also matters so choose your angles carefully too.
Low light shooting focus problems, if it is still life need to let the camera connected to a computer or iPad to check the focus situation, if it is outdoor night portrait photography now the camera focus tracking function is very powerful, if it is the pursuit of another defocused art style then ignore these concerns :P
The fifth step is to experiment and review your low light photos. Good thing about digital photography, you can experiment a lot of setting until you found the ONE that you need. Keep on turn those dials until you get the correct setting with your preferences
in Order to get the best noise reduction results one should photograph in RAW format and employe dedicated Noise reduction software. DXO Pure Raw, Topaz Photo AI and the AI de-noise function in Adobe Lightroom are some examples.
This is the fun part! One thing I love about photography is that rules in this industry are made to be broken! Technique is good but learn to expand beyond the comfort zone of your own style. I have found that the best images came from situations where I did not know how to fully execute. The turn out was much better than expected.

Get your holding technique and body posture right. 1. While holding the camera, your left palm should be right under the camera with your fingers firmly gripping the lens. The left hand carries the bulk of the weight. Opposite for left handed people. 2. You right hand firmly snugs around the right side with your index finger placed gently ON the shutter. Not above. 3. Both your hands should then be smug to your body from the elbow. 4. Your legs should not be in one line. They should be one half step ahead of another. Either legs is fine. Whichever suits you. 5. Before you RELEASE the shutter (not press), take a deep breath and just before you start breathing out you gently caress the shutter button down to release the shutter. Erotic?

Low light photography isn't just challenging; it's an opportunity to grow and experiment, regardless of your photography style. I love to bring my lighting gear into play during these conditions. But lighting is crucial to me. That's why I always at least have a small tube light by Nanlite as a minimum with me. It allows me to creatively play with shadows, colours, and light angles. What's great about low light is, that with the right equipment, you can shape the scene to your liking without needing to block out any external light, setting the mood just how you want it. Above all, remember to enjoy what you're doing. Photography and videography are not just about the outcome but also about the process and the exploration.
All depends on what I would be doing in low light, Pro or amateur? Pro: have a great gear that will cover all possibilities. Amateur: Do what you can with what you have!Anyway, never stop having fun.
Even if you didn't get the perfect shot, work with what you've got and get creative. You may even learn a few things while having fun.
Low light photography of any kind can be a lot of fun. It also generally takes much more time, preparation and experience to attain good results. So practicing a lot and reviewing your work is key.
It's usually best (and easiest!) to get your settings right in camera, but you still end up with a lot of shots that are too dark but which can quickly be rescued quite satisfactorily in post-production. For example, you could have a really dark shot of a person and a simple brush over the face in your editing programme to lighten it up could result in a very dramatic image which your client absolutely loves.
If shooting in low light conditions, bear in mind that such conditions may have been created purposely, such as a musical concert. You wouldn’t like to disturb anyone experiencing the event, therefore you mustn’t use a flash or other light sources. You also need try to be as invisible as possible, so you might need to wear dark clothing and don’t constantly check the images at the back of your camera as this is disturbing to both the audience and the musicians on stage.
Tripod can help photographing in low light conditions for static scenes, or for creating light trails as well. Using tripod allow you to -reduce ISO and avoid noise on your photos, -reduce shutter speed and get long exposure pictures (light trails, moving blur)
Once upon a time I might advice to buy lots of “fast” films of the…ultra speed of 6400ASA and strong flash lights and tripod maybe, depending on the subject. Today, in the new amazing era of digital photography, you just have to buy a new camera, released in the past 5 years and possibly you’ll be able to shoot in near darkness, without the need of tripod or extra flashlights. Just a relatively steady hand; maybe not even that!
