What do we mean by self-employed? It's unlikely that you'll be a solo GP, gaining trust of LPs for you to deploy their capital. If you're in the financial position to do it, you'll more likely to pull this off as an angel. But then here's the truth about angel investing that is rarely said - the dogwork in scaling to make it worth while is a lot. If you're serious about this route, it is not about sourcing deals - you can do that through hyper-local networking, events, referrals, data etc. But at the check size you'll likely to be deploying, you'll end up reading dozens, maybe even 50 (often very bad) decks per DAY to find enough of the right deals to even take to some form of due diligence and then investment. Proceed with caution.

Create a network of Founders who have raised Series B, IPO and recently sold company. The other potential investors would be CXO, Board Members of Public listed companies who can bring their network to co invest. Being alone, will not make it if you do not have rich friends and superb track record. You have to build a team that has experiense, track record, age difference and hopefully some experience on VC world.

I’ve found a lot of people think that VC operates like a regular business. Actually it does not. Here are some differences between VC and a regular business 1. Regular businesses are designed to hold cash and are driven by cash flow. VC’s don’t hold cash and they are driven to deploy capital and do not typically want to hold a lot of cash. 2. Regular business typically have 1 entity formed, sometimes 2, like a holding company. A VC firm has 3! I will not suggest to go solo in VC, find a partner and then launch your fund. Things will be slightly easier and you will feel less stressful.
