In my opinion empathy is worth more than any salary or bonus that can be offered. It's the flexibility, the understanding and compassion when your team need it most. Having a leader that recognises this is pivotal to any business - whether that's letting the team leave early on Friday after a long week, approving an additional day off, allowing them to work from home that additional day... they might sound like some small actions, but to the person who needs it, it can mean a lot!

In a particularly challenging project, we noticed signs of burnout among our team members. Instead of pushing harder, we organized a team outing to recharge and bond outside of work. To keep the team motivated, there can be multiple options like providing visibility and recognition. Allow them to attend different events to upskill/ reskill or network growth. Providing ESOPS to them so they feel motivated. Just to give an example: Organize a "Team Huddle" - a casual, weekly gathering for brainstorming, goal setting, and celebrating wins. Winners you may announce social media or internally to provide them visibility and recognition.

Promote transparency and open communication from the start. During hiring, clarify it's a startup environment to set realistic expectations. Don't create a misleading narrative, it will cause frustration over time. Being open about your challenges, especially when resources are limited, fosters trust, ownership, and respect. Encourage questions, concerns, and ideas. Your team will feel connected, valued, and invested in the company's success. Though seemingly counterintuitive, in my experience being open can yield impressive results, keeping your team motivated on a tight budget.
