There is concept called First Principles which is not only useful for programming but for most knowledge areas, by learning and having solid principles on the fundamentals in such field, you can easily jump to more complex concepts. For instance, as C or C++ are closer to hardware you can almost instantly learn python or even java, good luck doing it the other way around.

You will definitely want a strong foundation in low level programming. C and C++ are the most likely candidates for computer engineering roles. It would be best if you can find a company that has a decent coding standard and review process to ensure you're using good practices. Including the use of automated linting tools can be a part of this. If the company doesn't do much on review, then you could still take a role but ensure that you study and apply best practices to set yourself up for success for the rest of your career. Look up some common coding standards in the industry and try to establish a review process if possible.

Hands-on experience with creating and/or programming hardware is the best way to learn it. Be excited about being able to use industry standard tools to create, verify and debug hardware. You'll likely use these skills in all of your future roles.

Basic knowledge of computer hardware, microprocessors, and embedded systems can be very useful. This includes understanding how different components interact and how to troubleshoot hardware issues.

One cannot survive in modern Computer Engineering industry for long without knowing the widely used and industry standard hardware architectures, and among those the ARM is leader. Having a strong grasp on hardware architecture helps you in writing an efficient and bug-proof code. One must have atleast basic understanding of how a microprocessor or microcontroller works, how an instruction is executed and what does even endianess means, all of them are hardware related terms.

Hardware knowledge is an added advantage an individual can have. This will help in opening more opportunities and explore various possibilities. The understanding of various microprocessors will surely add weightage to one's knowledge base.

In my experince, the best way to start programming is to start with a popular IDE, like Visual Studio or if programming the hardware, Arduino. They have a wide community supports and teach a lot to a novice without overwhelming them. Having a firm grip on Version control systems and familiarity with most widely used industry standard softwares is a key to sustain in industry, or to be honest, sustain for the interview duration in front of an expert. I would recommend starting with Git and Visual Studio Code

Embedded Systems understanding, knowledge and ability to design FSM (finite state machine) and implement with C or C++. RTOS (real time operating systems) is the must.

Understanding network basics is crucial, especially when dealing with complex systems like the AUTOSAR Ethernet stack in automotive engineering.

Good system design leads to flexible system integration. It is important to keep in mind the system as a whole while do your development. You must account for changes in hardware, specifications, and/or cross platform support. Good system design not only allows for easier system integration, but it also helps your future self and coworkers when they need to work on the project as well. A well thought out system is an efficient system.

Soft skills are, indeed important. Bear in mind that some of these soft skills are, for some people elusive. For others, soft skills, like an athletic ability, comes naturally. For many, training and practice, will help.

Your technical skills will get you in the industry, your soft skills will be the real weapon if your want to progress at a faster pace. To hold a high position, like a Manager, the first thing that counts is how well you handle and extract the most from developers of different backgrounds. It's the ultimate weapon, I would say. If you're gifted with soft skills, that's great, otherwise the famous quote, "Practice makes a man perfect".
