1 What is mentorship?

Mentorship is a relationship between a more experienced and a less experienced person, where the former provides guidance, support, and feedback to the latter. A mentor can help you with various aspects of your professional development, such as setting goals, solving problems, learning new skills, expanding your network, and finding opportunities. A mentor can also act as a role model, a sounding board, and a source of inspiration and motivation.

Mentorship is like sifu and tu ti. Sometimes are strict, sometimes are soft, sometimes are friend, sometimes are teacher. No matter how, both are like each other, sincerely coaching, happy and can say "love" each other. Sifu is like a candle, burning himself or herself to enlight his or her tu ti.

Their guidance facilitates learning through hands-on experience, allowing mentees to benefit from accumulated wisdom without having to start from scratch. By attentively listening to their mentors, individuals can glean insights into what strategies are effective and what pitfalls to avoid. Unlike the immediate results often seen with renewable energy installations, energy efficiency initiatives can be more elusive to grasp. Herein lies the importance of mentorship; mentors provide invaluable guidance in navigating the complexities of energy efficiency, ensuring that lessons learned are not only impactful but also sustainable.

3 How to find a mentor?

Finding a mentor can be tricky, especially in a niche and competitive field like Energy Management. You need to look for someone who has relevant experience and expertise, who shares your values and vision, and who is willing and able to invest time and energy in your relationship. 5 How to measure your progress?

Mentorship can have a positive impact on your performance and satisfaction as a project manager in Energy Management. But how can you tell if you are making progress and achieving your goals? You need to track and evaluate your results, both quantitatively and qualitatively. You can use metrics such as project completion rate, project quality, client satisfaction, cost savings, revenue generation, or skill acquisition. You can also use indicators such as feedback, recognition, opportunities, or confidence. You can also ask your mentor for their assessment and feedback on your progress.

Effective communication is always the main key point. Keep asking and keep answering from both sides, then mentorship will be really building up the junior. Not just give opinions and experience talks... should always measure the progress and always ask myself...are we serious to learn and really to teach?

6 How to end or renew mentorship?

Mentorship is not a permanent or static relationship. It can evolve, change, or end over time, depending on your needs, goals, and circumstances. You need to be honest and respectful with your mentor, and communicate your intentions and expectations. You can end your mentorship if you feel that you have achieved your goals, outgrown your mentor, or developed a conflict or mismatch with your mentor. You can also renew or extend your mentorship if you feel that you still have more to learn, or want to explore new areas or challenges with your mentor.

Your mentors do not expect you to be stagnant, so they expect the possibility of you not only developing but also outgrowing them. As they have played an important role in your professional development, it will be good to have a means or platform for possible future communication with them even after the period of mentorship. You should seek their consent for this, and they can advise you which open communication channel is best for them. It could be LinkedIn, while others might prefer only emails. Lastly, some mentors still play an important role in your career progression even after the mentorship period as they can help provide recommendations and referrals in the future.
