Get the statistician/epidemiologist/econometrician involved early in the design process to force you to apply a rigorous logic to the design. I was brought in late as a statistician on a study of nicotine replacement to reduce smoking in kids who did not want to quit. The latter is the key - they did not want to quit. Overlooking that factor meant that the PIs did not realize that the REAL intervention was the per encounter payment to these teens for participation, not the nicotine replacement. ALL groups, including the placebo group, showed similar declines when receiving weekly payments for monitoring sessions, reverting to previous smoking patterns as gap between the monitoring sessions increased, and the rate of pay over time shrank.

One of the things I have found helpful is to understand that research ethics and potential issues often extend beyond IRB review. It is a good idea to write about ethical issues that attend to sensitive issues that can be potentially re-traumatizing to participants particularly those with trauma histories. Proposal reviewers particularly funding agencies will expect to see attention to how you will mitigate harm. It will also be important to discuss meaningful inclusion especially for community based research.

Learn the Common Rule, definition of a "human subject," and exemptions! Most of my work involved organization-level units of analysis, and hence was not subject to IRB approval. Learn the exemptions and specifically cite applicable ones in your IRB application - don't assume the board is truly knowledgeable about them. MAKE them be aware of how research is exempt if that is the case.

Use a statistician, epidemiologist, or econometrician. Trust me, as a nursing professor most of you DO NOT have the background in statistics to do a good job. You need someone who understands the mathematics and assumptions of the statistical model, and your data will almost certainly NOT be clean enough to meet all the mathematical assumptions. This is one of the biggest reasons I give for rejecting articles I review for journals - violation of model assumptions. Do a power analysis up front to ensure that your sample size is large enough to detect meaningful outcomes. THINK about what potential confounders exist in your study and what sort of selection bias you are likely to experience with your sample.
