You’re preparing for a job interview. What’s the best way to make a great first impression?

The #1 piece of feedback I hear from recruiters is that candidates need to do more company research. However, I find that research only makes an impact if you're connecting your knowledge and what you offer to the research you've conducted. How can you help a company solve its challenges? Do you have expertise in their market? What trends are you seeing that can affect the company and/or the role you're interviewing for? Making the connections between the research and your value is the most important part of the interview, in my view.

Researching a company goes beyond surface-level information. It's crucial to understand the company's strategic direction and challenges. This knowledge shows your genuine interest and also allows you to tailor your responses to demonstrate how your skills and experiences align with the company's needs. Additionally, referencing recent news or milestones during the interview can set you apart as a candidate who has done their homework and is truly invested in the company's future.

Dressing appropriately for an interview extends beyond mere aesthetics; it's a form of non-verbal communication that conveys respect for the company and the role. It's also a strategic move that can psychologically align you with the company culture, making it easier for interviewers to envision you as part of their team. Moreover, proper attire can boost your confidence, which in turn positively affects your posture, speech, and overall demeanor during the interview.

Air on the side of being overdressed by one-notch. If a company is casual (jeans and t-shirts), wear slacks and a collar. If a company is business casual, shoot for business professional (blazer, skirt or more formal pants/blouse). And for goodness sakes--try to be comfortable! If you know you'll be interviewing, invest in an outfit that makes you feel comfortable--and that fits. An interview is not a time to cram yourself back into pants that are too tight, or to try to button the top button of a dress shirt that is already strangling you. That discomfort will distract you from being your best self--and your physical discomfort will probably be noticeable to the people interviewing you.

Being late for a job interview is one of the worst things in your professional life. Ensure you are making a test drive. Even if you know how to get there, adding 15 minutes of extra time is better. Every delay worsens your starting position and restricts the amount of talk time available. If a delay cannot be avoided, call your interviewer briefly and state the reason.

Try to exude warmth. How do you do that? Spend a few minutes before your interview thinking about someone or something you love. Mentally pet your dog. Think about what you love about your spouse. Remember a time when you felt happy and fulfilled. The warmth you feel will carry through to the interview experience.

Please be friendly to everyone you meet in the company, not only with the interviewer. Competent organisations are trying to get feedback from all employees, from the receptionist to the office workers! Try to make a friendly impression on everyone!

Essential is already the introduction in the beginning, mostly starting like: "Nice to have you here. Could you please introduce yourself briefly?" In your short self-portrait, you should not only pray chronologically for the stations of your curriculum vitae – how boring! Your personality profile is instead about the formative highlights, i.e., the essential stations and experiences that you recommend for the potential employer's vacant position simultaneously. To prepare optimally for this, you must first research the exact requirements of the advertised position and the essential specifics of the industry and the company.
