I agree to the point that one should be aware of indexes and what columns need to be indexed. Although indexing helps in achieveing fine tuning of queries, over-indexing could lead slower refresh and I/o rate of data as it has to find multiple keyed values. Beware of over-indexing!

Based on my personal experience, basic definitions and knowledge alone do not impress or prove much. We need to convey how these pieces of knowledge apply in project situations. For example, when discussing Index knowledge, we should address: - The architecture of B-tree Index and how it has been applied in your project. - Situations where B-tree Index is ineffective, why that is, and in which project you encountered it. - The differences between B-tree Index and Bitmap Index.

Knowing basics is crucial. I always review fundamental concepts before interviews. Sharing real experiences is powerful - I prepare specific examples of performance issues I've solved. Query optimization is key skill. I practice explaining common techniques like indexing and partitioning. Understanding tools is also important. I make sure I can discuss popular monitoring and profiling tools. Staying updated with latest trends shows dedication. I follow database blogs and attend webinars regularly. Clear communication is often overlooked but very important. I practice explaining complex concepts in simple terms. I would add one more point: be ready to solve sample problems. Some interviews include practical tests.

When discussing my personal experiences, there is one thing I often focus on to immediately demonstrate my competence: The reasoning I used to identify the root cause of the problem in that particular situation. Through this reasoning, I can prove my deep understanding.

Optimizing SQL statements is a common issue in projects. When I want to demonstrate my ability to optimize SQL, I usually do the following: - Help everyone understand what a database truly does when an SQL statement is sent to it. - Provide evidence of reading and analyzing the execution strategy of the SQL statement. - Analyze special cases in projects, such as why in a securities system, there are instances where the execution strategy of a statement changes, leading to inconsistent performance (sometimes fast, sometimes slow).

During the interview, i show to the interviewer how can i analyze the query by using EXPLAIN ANALYZE keyword to evaluate the high-cost queries. Demonstrate the steps I took to address the bottleneck like reindexing the database, using partitioning or use temporary tables.

A key insight in query optimization is leveraging query execution plans to identify inefficiencies. For instance, analyzing execution plans can reveal hidden issues like redundant full table scans or poorly chosen indexes. Additionally, regular reviews of execution plans after database updates or schema changes ensure that optimizations remain effective

One thing I found helpful is using of CTEs over temp tables as querying from CTEs are faster. Ofcourse it also depends on the size of the dataset, with temp tables make sure to index the pk column

I would emphasize my familiarity with a variety of performance tuning tools to demonstrate my proficiency in database performance tuning. For instance, I've tracked long-term performance difficulties using tools for historical trend analysis and real-time monitoring to find performance bottlenecks. By using these tools, I've been able to ensure effective database operations by reducing latency and optimizing queries. Giving concrete examples of how these technologies were used to address problems will demonstrate the capacity to apply data-driven insights to productive performance enhancements.

According to my experience, when i deal with non-technical clients, i not only show the techniques to solve slow query performance, but i also show the results of applying these techniques through numerical data, like how the queries speed up x2 times and the cost of the queries is reduced. In addition, i provide the documentation in which i detail, step-by-step, the method i use to resolve.
