In my coaching approach, I always prioritize the needs of the client. Client-centered coaching is not about being too lenient or hands-off. It's about respecting and empowering the client, helping them develop their dignity, autonomy, self-determination, self-efficacy, and self-expertise. After all, they are the experts of their own lives, not you.

Understand and clearly define your coaching style. Whether it’s collaborative, directive, or facilitative, knowing your style helps you articulate it confidently. Personal Experience: I realized my coaching style was primarily collaborative. I focus on partnering with clients to co-create solutions. Knowing this helped me communicate my approach effectively in interviews.

I would move beyond 'style' and encourage reflection on one's understanding of coaching itself. It's important to recognize that factors such as being more or less direct, offering advice, or adopting a collaborative approach are all contextual and depend on the specific needs of the client. A deep understanding of coaching, distinct from consulting, facilitation, therapy, and other disciplines, is crucial. The field of coaching often faces confusion (both from the coaching professional and the client sides), making it essential to explain coaching in plain, simple, and accessible terms. This clarity helps both you and your potential client evaluate whether there is a good fit between what the client needs and what you can offer.

My coaching style blends directive and collaborative approaches. I provide clear guidance when specific expertise is needed, like outlining strategies for project management. For example, I once directed a team through a complex workflow by setting milestones and offering targeted advice. However, I also foster empowerment, encouraging team members to develop their solutions. Conversely, if the company prefers structure, you might explain: "I excel at providing clear, actionable steps and setting defined goals, which matches your need for a structured approach." By aligning your coaching philosophy with the company's values, you demonstrate that you're a strong cultural fit and understand their core principles.

Adapt your message to align with the needs of the potential employer. Highlight aspects of your style that resonate with their company culture and values. This helped demonstrate my fit with their organization.

Also, trust the examples that come to mind during the conversation—whether from your head, heart, or gut. Avoid being overly scripted and instead, demonstrate your coaching skills by deeply listening, mirroring, and asking relevant questions. Steer clear of appearing defensive by presenting examples that aren't directly relevant. Remember, tailoring your approach to meet your client's needs is what makes you an effective coach.

Providing real-life examples of how you've previously mentored/coached people is more valuable and effective than simply describing definitions of coaching styles. The real stories help to humanize you and illustrate exactly how you will interact with team members in real work situations.

Whatever isn't measured isn't managed. Whenever you're running a coaching or mentoring program make sure you have tangible metrics showing numerical data points. People like numbers. And people like numbers even more if they're linked to something like ROI, revenue or profit margins.

Obviously within an interview you're focusing on displaying your skillset and strengths. From a psychological perspective, when somebody is nothing but positives it can be a turn off. (People trust businesses with a 4.5 star Google rating more than a 5 star rating) After displaying your strengths, follow-up with a moment that didn't go well. Humans trust other humans, and humans aren't perfect. Don't leave it there, but highlight how you've grown from the experience.

Not all interviews may necessarily provide the right environment as it may be too structured however I would strongly recommend that you speak with honesty and integrity, it shows. It is now obvious that everyone should provide examples when responding to questions on this however take it one step further. Tell a story. A real story with real people and the real passion that existed at the time. If you are really a coach you will have them and they should come naturally.
