You're preparing for a Higher Education interview. How do you showcase your research experience effectively?

When you talk about your research experience in a higher education interview, make sure to match it with the department's focus. Look into what the department is known for and connect your experience with that. If they're big on different fields working together, talk about any projects where you did that. Explain the methods you're good at and how they've helped in past successes. Be specific by giving examples of your skills and what you've accomplished instead of just saying you have research experience.

Depending on the university it may be important to link your research to undergraduate and graduate student experiential learning. Highlighting collaborations with students is a high priority in teaching-centered institutions.

Your CV will have provided the data on publications, grants & examples of esteem and peer recognition etc. The board members will have read these and made comparisons with other candidates & experience of previous applications. Impress on the board the context of your research and the impact. Relate the narrative to international comparisons & especially mention national and imternational collaborators. Finally show that you are capable of achieving a professorship with a viable strategy & outline research plan.

Once your fields of expertise match those of the university/college you apply to, tailoring your research experiences to align with their department would be straightforward. Highlight the matching list of research and academic curricula in your application.

LinkedIn says you need to highlight how you align with a department's current interests but this isn't necessarily true. They may be seeking new perspectives, new methodologies, new and interesting ways of teaching. Identifying synergies will help show genuine interest in working there but loads of candidates will say they fit into x research group because of their work on y and they can work with Professor Z - end of slide/answer to the question. Instead, position yourself as offering something unique. How has your research developed it's own identity? i.e. your unique approach and perspective that will be attractive to publishers and funders. Does your research have a clear path for application in society? How will you exploit that?

Simplicity is the key to communicating clearly. If you can clearly explain why you are the best fit for the academic department, the interview board members will find it easy to decide if you are a suitable candidate.

Make sure the collaborations you suggest are genuine and focus on relationships you already have around the globe, if you have them. Highlight the things you could possibly develop as part of the research group, but don't just name drop. Don't go into an interview saying how you will just set up and teach your own courses. In the UK, you will inevitably need to teach as part of a team on large undergraduate modules as well as perform an administrative/leadership role. So you don't want to be seen as one of those people who wants to just get in with their research and be left alone!

Higher education needs collaboration in research and academia. Hence, higher education applications should explicitly show the candidate's collaborative prowess. It can be in the form of mention of research papers or books co-authored by the candidate and researchers from different universities.
