I love reading stories about how an applicant finds himself or herself to be relevant through an experience or a set of life circumstances. Working in the non-profit sector requires everything that one needs for the commercial sector and then it requires heart. So often, I find myself reading about applicants with amazing resumes with awesome skills. However, the resumes (that create an impression for further consideration) often include bits of stories or experience resonating with the cause or the beneficiaries. Try it in your application if you want to be noticed.

A skilled generalist can be a nonprofit's best hire. Show that you have a breadth of knowledge, diverse skills, and a positive attitude as you face challenges. Don't forget to showcase the experience you've gained outside formal work settings – as a volunteer, parent, or community leader. Show how you can grow with the organization.

Yes, showcase how your values align with the organization – but don't be swept up in what you read online or in documents. As you speak with the organization and their team, ask questions to draw out values in their daily work: - How do they respond to mistakes and failures? - How much do donors, especially very wealthy ones, influence decisions? - Are they driven more by feelings or data? - How attached are they to program activities vs evolving methods in light of new research? - Is the organization highly stable or volatile? These dimensions of culture reveal underlying values, which may not be the ones you first encounter.

Use a personal story to connect with the organisation. they are looking for diversity which also applies to lived experience. For example - when I applied for a position with a hospice organisation, I shared (appropriately) what hospice meant to me and my family. And truly, that experience was what made me want to work there in the first place. I connected with their values!
