If you want to learn a new skill, don't hesitate to approach your manager and just ask him/her: "Okay, I would like to learn how this technology works, how can we implement this technology in our tasks?". Ten years ago or so, I wanted to fully understand the process behind creating an app and getting it through the various hurdles with Apple and into the store. I also wanted to know other things, such as how iOS native dev handled things like resources, variations in graphics across various devices and so on. So, I learned Objective-C, discovered that was just horrible to work with, so learned Swift instead and built a couple of graphic-rich games and got them into the AppStore. There are lots of ways of learning 'new stuff' but in my opinion, at least, nothing beats 'actually doing it'.
