I was sidelined due to a severe injury that also required surgery with an extended period of time to recover. I signed up at Metropolitan Toronto University for a post grad Data Science, Big Data and Data Analytics certificate. Not related to networking but filled with information on statistics, and new technologies. From what I learned in this program I started taking other courses in Devops, AWS and web services. I also made contributions to papers at professional societies in network and cloud security and elsewhere. This prepared me for getting back into tech after being away for a considerable amount of time. I had fallen behind considerably but the gradient would have been much steeper had I not pursued studies and volunteerism

It's usually the case that one is more familiar with certain vendors than others, depending on the ecosystems they are exposed to. An employment hiatus, deliberate or otherwise, gives one time to research on other available network security solutions; their strengths and weaknesses, Gartner ratings being my go-to option. Maintaining or establishing interaction with professionals using different solutions is also imperative.Subscribing to network security newsletters and following research by and connecting with opinion leaders in the industry also ensures that one will always be ready for the next engagement.

Networking is dynamic and being out of work is temporal and should keep you busy while seeking a new opportunity. It is very important for network engineers to cultivate the habit of continuous learning for increased productivity and confidence boost. Furthermore, learning is progressive for all careers and should be prioritized for a successful career growth in Networking.

Remain Aware. As a Network Security Professional you must be aware of the threats plaguing internet connected systems. As a security professional, it is imperative to maintain knowledge of active threats, not only new ones but older threats as well. Be aware of what is trending. Some threats may be more prevalent than others. In addition, one must possess the skill sets necessary to mitigate the risks associated with the perceived threats. As already stated by many in this discussion, there are many online courses, both free and requiring payment, that can be utilized to sharpen ones skills. Staying sharp will be an attractive selling point to any hiring manager when you decide to re enter the job market.
