You’re an IT Operations Management professional. How can you build trust with your colleagues?

People like to be able to make a connection, and they can’t do that if their guard is up. This is hard to do if they worry that they are going to come off as being judged for their knowledge or how they do their job. IT can be quite overwhelming to some people in the organization who become afraid to ask questions for fear of being thought of as dumb. In other cases, people can become arrogant, feeling they don’t need help – or worry about asking for help as it may tarnish their reputation. Being transparent and honest, showing your own limitations, and showing interest in an area they master, helps normalize the relationship.

It is critical that you present a competence in your field, and that when you talking on a subject that you honestly know what you are talking about. This goes to another area, about being honest about your own limitation whenever it becomes relevant to do so. This is also where reliability can come in, that even if you don’t know the answer off the top of your head, that people can trust you to follow through with finding the answer and building that competence. IT is a fast paced industry, with constant changes, nobody is expected to always know everything, but we can be expected to keep up with it as needed.

Everybody provides the organization with a particular set of skills, and comes form a unique set of backgrounds. Regardless of trying to build trust and respect with people within IT, or outside of it, it is important to make sure you give them the opportunity to present their skills and values, and for you to truly appreciate them. Don’t pretend to have an interest, if you are not really interested, as that can permanently damage the relationship as that will show in the long run. You need to really appreciate the value of everybody, and what they bring.

Effective communication is vital to gain trust with colleagues or even with anyone in general, would that to be properly achieved one might emphasize on points of consideration, such as being authentic and fully transparent in sharing and communicating information respectfully. Secondly, building and creating rapport and encourage sense of belonging and interests with colleagues life aspects by engaging, participating in social interactions and activities. Third, demonstrate empathy and understanding with respect to your colleagues feelings and preferences while encouraging sharing ideas openly and promote growth mindset.

Building trust through communication and collaboration is essential for ensuring that stakeholders feel confident in the processes and decisions being made. Many make the mistake of thinking its about 50/50 relationships. Go beyond the normal. Go 90% of the way out of the gate and meet stakeholders in their space, then deliver. Over time, you'll find the line cheats in your favor up to and past a 50/50 relationship through goodwill and patience.

First and foremost understand your colleagues are also your customers! Be supportive. Understand their challenges and understand their strategies and roadmap. Offer up no or low cost solutions like monitoring and or digestible reports that they can share with their customers. Be honest with your timelines as your number impacts their deliverables. Offer up supporting team members that can be proactive to their needs. My first question and last question is what can I do to ensure you are successful. Communicate!
