It is also important to build relationships with the students’ communities outside of school. Often students perceptions of school are shaped in part by the perceptions of their caregivers. You have to encourage involvement and ensure that caregivers feel safe and appreciated. They must feel like a part of a collaborative effort to improve outcomes.

For a new teacher in a struggling school, planning with purpose is essential to make a significant impact on students. Planning with a purpose is huge. If your district follows a curriculum with specific deadlines you should be first, paying close attention to that. From their you can be modifying the lessons for your students. Think about their background knowledge and what you might need to supplement to ensure they have the best understanding of the lesson. Use data that you have collected to build instructional groupings and determine areas of weakness.

Remember first and foremost that “struggling” is a matter of perception usually based on test scores and in no way accurately reflects the quality of teaching in the school nor the quality of student who comes into your class. Don’t take things personally, and accept that sometimes a student is simply having a bad day; be the one adult in their life who doesn’t yell at them but instead takes the time to approach them with a sense of transparency and accountability. As much as today’s students are stereotyped as being disrespectful, the reality is they are compassionate, thoughtful people with more kindness than my generation can dream of, and they deserve to be treated as such.

I prioritize establishing a foundation of collaboration, respect, and accountability right from the start. It's essential to create an environment where everyone feels valued and heard, fostering a sense of belonging and unity within our school community. To achieve this, I lead by example and actively promote these values in all aspects of our school culture. One of the key ways we cultivate this culture is by modeling and teaching social and emotional skills. We recognize the importance of empathy, self-regulation, and problem-solving in fostering positive relationships and navigating challenges effectively. Through explicit instruction and experiential learning, we empower our students to understand and manage their emotions.

Make it Fun and Engaging: Use hands-on activities, games, songs, stories, and manipulatives to keep learning engaging and interactive. Focus on Play-based Learning: Play is essential for young children's development. Design learning activities that incorporate play within a structured curriculum.

Be honest with your students. Acknowledge the challege and let them know you're on their side and with them every step of the way. And stay committed when some of them push back with everything they've got!

The biggest way to leave a lasting impression on student is to first fall in love with what you are teaching. If you know your subject well and are curious to know more on it, your efforts on bringing creativity in lecture delivery will become inevitable.

As a former principal and teacher, I would say that the four most important things early on are: 1) focus on building strong relationships with each students so that they feel known; 2) be a "warm demander" by clearly defining the routines and rituals of your classroom. Aim for that ratio of 5 positives to 1 constructive comments, affirm positive choices, and be clear about the structures and expectations that shape your classroom culture; 3) be intentional around fostering joy for learning. This includes a host of games each day that make the learning more dynamic, engaging, and fun -- I would aim for at least three games a day; 4) develop a strong classroom community through practices such as sharing circles and other SEL practices.

By being honest, telling the truth and putting their best interests first - you took the job to maximize their potential and not your own.

Master your subject and teach with enthusiasm. Let your students see that you love what you're doing (Teaching) and that you will do it over and over again. Simplify complex topics for students better understanding. Challenge your students to be independent

What ever you are doing, do it with passion and be an authority. Try as much as possible to carry the students along with encouragement. Be consistent in what you are doing and be firm in taking decision. No preferential treatment among the students. Rules and regulations must be guiding principles. Equity and equality to prevail.

As a teacher, I firmly believe that continuous professional development (CPD) and personal growth (PH) are absolutely essential—no excuses. It's crucial for refining our practice, addressing any issues or concerns, and staying current in the ever-evolving field of education. I make it a priority to actively seek out CPD opportunities that can help me grow both personally and professionally. This might include attending workshops and conferences, enrolling in courses or webinars, or joining professional networks where I can collaborate with peers and learn from their experiences.

For me, when in a struggling school, this is the most important aspect within your teaching. You can plan all you like and deliver different method for supporting students, but without reflection on what is working or not working, you will just burn yourself out. Take time to see the bigger picture and don’t beat yourself up if something has not worked. A good strategy is to ‘play’ with your new approaches. See them as games and play them for a designated amount of time (perhaps a couple of weeks). Then reflect on whether you think you are ‘winning’ at the end of it. If the game doesn’t work, the try a new game.

This is perhaps the best teacher training advice ever. Become a reflective teacher from day one, and ask for feedback from your students regularly (i.e. at the end of term) as our message isn’t always perceived in the way we intent it to. Reflect honestly on your practice and evaluate what went well and why; and what didn’t work and why. It can be difficult to admit that we aren’t perfect, but it is absolutely essential if we are to become the best version of ourselves that we possibly can.

Share good practice, use each other's ideas, support your colleagues and try new things. Collaboration is about letting go of your ego and embracing that learning and improving never ends and that it's ok that someone has a better approach than you at the moment. The capacity to change our ways and improve is crucial in becoming great educators and true lifelong learners.

Search out the best teachers in the school and observe them in the classroom. The best teachers have established relationships with struggling learners and have deep knowledge of community needs, weakness, and strengths. They also have excellent benchmark assessments that they use to target lessons catering to the individual learners. Ask one to observe your class and give you feedback for improving lesson plans, content delivery in the classroom, tips on discipline with dignity, and the caring approach to identifying gaps in your students’ learning. Use the feedback and continue the classroom observations to establish a professional mentoring relationship with that master teacher.

There really needs to be a deep understanding of the reasons why the school is struggling and the school's vision. The difference between the two is likely to be the very problem(s) that teachers are seeking to overcome. Only when the problem is accurately articulated can meaningful, sustainable and impactful solutions be brought by teachers.
