I would suggest start with recognizing the role of SCM in the organization. That is to support the continued and increasing flow of goods to all customers (I.e Sales), when, how and where they want them. And doing so, as efficiently, effectively and sustainably as possible. With that approach, the 5 key things to know, learn or develop would be (1) How end-to-end flow works, globally, regionally and locally to support the organization's strategy (2) COGS and Expense drivers incurred along the entire end-to-end flow (3) IT systems, data transfer, communication approaches along the entire end-to-end flow (4) General soft skills development (communication, team dynamics, problem-solving, team leadership) (5) Project management

Rather than just landing a job where you are doing very tedious tasks that are not really adding value, take part in projects that are contributing to the company’s bottom line. If you’re saving costs and improving metrics this will help you grow within the company.

Understanding the flow of goods and information throughout the supply chain is essential. This involves knowing how products move from suppliers to manufacturers, then to distributors, retailers, and ultimately, to customers.
