You're in a new sales role. How can you maintain your edge?

Invest the time to understand why your product adds value to someone. What are the problems that your potential client has to deal with. This will help you gain empathy and understanding of the benefits for your potential customer. Take time to learn from them and read testimonials, listen to calls, talk to your product team and other colleagues. You want to be the expert in the product you are offering.

Maintaining ones "edge" varies. There is no one solution. I was in the tech industry for close to a decade. No matter how many techniques and trends you learn, if your employer deems you or your division not profitable enough, you're gone. One employer, our division was ranked moved back and forth between 2 and 3 in the industry at the time. Wasn't enough, whole division was shuttered. In another, the employer decided to change strategies and move away from consumer markets. Same result, shuttered an entire division. If you want an edge to maintain, make it an edge on yourself. Keep tabs on options in case things go south.

Understand what your customer’s unique challenges and goals are and then tailor your products to them. Perhaps your customer’s business depends on quick and reliable, how does your product uniquely address this need?

Try to do what 95% of the salesperson in the role not are doing. Differentiate yourself from others: 1- Be an expert in your market 2- Master your tonality 3- Be curious and ask intelligent questions 4- Go deep in the conversation 5- Break the old salesperson pattern 6- Make more calls

Mindset beats skills in sales. Someone could have a a great process and know their product inside and out but lose out on sales because of their mindset. In sales you need to be able to deal with rejection, stay positive, be confident, persistent, and motivated to succeed. If you don’t work on these then your great process or knowledge will not help you as much as they could.

Take time to break down your goals of revenue and activity to daily, weekly and monthly. This will enable you a plan to reach them and ensure you are on the path to being successful. It will also enable you to see when you may be going off course and need to correct yourself to get back on track. Track, measure, reflect and attack.

Establish clear and achievable sales goals for yourself. Break down your goals into smaller milestones and track your progress regularly. Setting goals will keep you motivated, focused, and driven to succeed in your new role.
