the biggest issue is to be general in what you say, but also be specific enough to prove you know what you are talking about. And the biggest mistake is not being interesting enough for people to care what you say, if you have done your homework, you should know your audience to some degree, and targeting what you want to share should be relevant and not all encompassing for a first talk. You need to have enough expertise to answer questions, or you are just wasting peoples time.

this factor depends on the subject, sometime the safe space is very limited and not safe for everyone, some people just like to vent to get the attention. A safe space is usually composed of people with common ground or ideas, or a very controlled environment

This is very easy not being flexible and adaptable is a killer in this arena. Being flexble does not mean giving in to other it means not everyone communicates the same way and to get your message through may mean using different techniques, without giving up your morals or ethics
