1 Find your niche

Before you offer your mentorship to anyone, you need to identify your niche and your target audience. What are you passionate about? What are your areas of expertise and experience? What are the problems or needs that you can help solve or address? By finding your niche, you can position yourself as a credible and relevant mentor who can provide specific and tailored advice to your mentees.

I consult on startups and general business situations that are too nuanced for google search. I take anything from formal calls to impromptu discussions, usually from people starting their businesses and sometimes from more seasoned professionals. When people problems arise, I delight in helping solve them. I've given mentorship on everything from stock option pools, co-founder agreements, pitch deck creation, market penetration, product pricing, idea validation, financial modeling, and tagline/slogan writing. An MBA exposed me to a variety of fields. What do I enjoy most though? Marketing, HR, and some finance.

How much time and resources are you willing to commit? By setting your goals, you can clarify your expectations and intentions for your mentorship, and communicate them clearly to your potential mentees.

3 Choose your mentees

The next step is to choose your mentees. You might have some existing contacts or referrals who are interested in your mentorship, or you might have to reach out to potential mentees through various channels, such as networking events, online platforms, or mentoring programs. When choosing your mentees, you should look for some criteria, such as their motivation, commitment, goals, and fit with your niche and style.

4 Establish rapport

After you have chosen your mentees, you need to establish rapport with them. Rapport is the foundation of a trusting and productive mentoring relationship. You can build rapport by showing genuine interest and curiosity in your mentees, listening actively and empathetically to their stories and challenges, and sharing your own insights and experiences. You should also respect their individuality and diversity, and avoid imposing your own opinions or judgments on them.

Put your ego aside. Ask questions. Care. Be in a mindset of learning as you talk to your mentees. Be available when they need to talk. Give them moral support. It's about encouraging them where they're unconfident or uncertain, and about providing strategic and tactical advice.

5 Provide feedback

One of the most important roles of a mentor is to provide feedback to your mentees. Feedback is the way you help your mentees learn, grow, and improve. You should provide feedback that is timely, specific, constructive, and supportive. You should also balance positive and negative feedback, and focus on the behavior and performance, not the person. You should also encourage your mentees to give you feedback on your mentorship, and use it to improve your own skills.

You need to be able to give harsh feedback in a soft way. You also need to be emotionally connected to the startups you're mentoring, so when they do well, you become genuinely happy, and communicate your happiness to them. Good vibes, when genuine, matter a lot- they're priceless.

6 Celebrate success

The last step is to celebrate success with your mentees. Success can be defined in different ways, depending on the goals and milestones that you and your mentees have agreed on. You should acknowledge and appreciate your mentees' achievements, no matter how big or small they are. You should also celebrate your own success as a mentor, and reflect on what you have learned and gained from the mentoring experience.
