Have they accomplished what you’re setting out to achieve at this time in your journey? If the answer is yes, then that is someone you might want to consider sitting down with for a coffee chat to see if they feel like a match for you. Another thing to pay attention to is whether they’re still evolving and growing. You want someone working with you who is constantly learning and challenging themselves as they elevate to their next level.

Going back to pen and paper can be really powerful. When you know you want to get somewhere but don't know how to start - map it out on paper. Start at the end with what you want to achieve, add all the steps you know you can carry out and the gaps will highlight areas where you need some support.

Sometimes, this can be the hardest step as fears of being rejected are hardwired into all of us. But, we are also hardwired to enjoy helping others! It's in our nature. Finding a mentor means finding someone who is elated to answer questions and offer advice - more so because they know lots about the subject. The hardest part here is teaching the person you're after. I've mostly acquired mentors by approaching them after speaking events or launching podcasts/interview series. This is the part that people on LinkedIn seem to want to race to. Slow things down and put in the effort. My Mom always used to say, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” Neither are relationships. They require nurturing and giving. Be the one who goes above and beyond what’s expected. That will take you to great places.

People are busy! To stand out, try to do a couple of things to convince the person to become your mentor; 1. Show you have done your research & understand their journey & experience. 2. Communicate honestly how much this mentorship could change your life! 3. Think about what you could do to support them & add value for them & make some suggestions.

Feedback is an essential element of the mentor-mentee relationship. The more you can feed in to the mentor they better they can support you.

Start slow and GIVE before you take. I once asked a top marketer to mentor me by working for free in his office for a week. I was in my 30s and had a career, but wanted to learn so much that taking a week off to learn was a no brainer.

Don’t get discouraged when people say no. Don’t take it personally. People are busy & have a lot on their plate & this not be the right time for them to mentor you. Keep going & move onto the next person!

If you're unable to directly find a mentor, consider volunteering for an industry association — there are a ton of well-seasoned professionals who also volunteer and is a great place to find mentors. Having a less-formal mentorship doesn't mean its inferior to a formal relationship.

I am on the side of you don't look for mentors they find you! Unpopular opinion but I have seen it happen many times.How do they find you when you are putting yourself out there and something about you reminds them of a younger version of them or when they were somewhere in their journey.Then the need to walk with you comes so intristically as they understand what it means to be where you are and now from experience they know exactly what to do to make it better!

You may not necessarily need a formal mentor per se. If you find one or more people that have tremendous insights, that are a few steps ahead of you, look to see if they have YouTube channels or podcasts or webinar recordings that you can listen to. You'd be surprised at how much freely available advice that truly is mentorship style delivered that you can get access to on demand without any formal commitment from the subject matter expert.

The important thing to consider is doing research and your do diligence. Try to understand if the things mentor are recommending have some back to it. Collaborating with the mentor should not be just a one way stream.
