En Colombia y Latinoamérica, es común encontrar colegas de Trabajo Social que estudiaron y ejercen la profesión sin un plan estratégico de su proyecto de vida profesional, lo cual se deriva en, por ejemplo, inconvenientes al momento de acceder a buenas oportunidades laborales o de permanecer en ellas. También, se corre con el riesgo de ejercer la profesión sin gusto y pasión, lo cual es triste, ya que nuestra profesión-disciplina requiere de una entrega genuina en pro de la generación de impacto social positivo. Pensar de manera estratégica el desarrollo de una carrera profesional requiere: autoconocimiento, establecimiento de metas realistas a mediano y largo plazo, una constante lectura del contexto y una honesta actitud hacia el cambio.

Skill development is essential when beginning a career in social work. Many of my supervisees aspire to have private practices, often starting with internships or initial jobs in small practices. While these roles are valuable, they offer a limited experience within the mental health field. It's important to view the first five years of your career as a time for foundational skill-building. Working in higher levels of care, such as inpatient or PHP/IOP, may offer lower pay but provides significantly more practical experience. The goal should be to become truly skilled at helping people; when you do, financial success and balance in the field of social work will naturally follow.
