Quantity of gear must always be balanced against carrying capacity. How far are you going? Are you carrying it all on your back? Do you have pack animals? Can gear be staged at your destination before you leave? The lower your carrying capacity the more carefully you must select your gear. Every month I brief our trail maintenance crew about the distance we need to hike in and the difficulty of the trail. I include weather forecasts and other notes about changing conditions. I also include a list of tasks to prepare for. I have been co-leader of the crew for nearly six years and we regularly update how we brief the crew learning from previous trips and other crews.

Hazard Recognition: As Geologist have knowledge about different terrains and structure already, a Geologist must take a look at the terrain and recognize different aspects of the structure or soil type which can give him a thorough strategy how tackle with any situations, for example if it's a mountain area a look at the formations and it direction a geologist can guess if it's more possiblity for a landslide or not, so is the case for an unconsolidated soil and landfills. These things can help in navigating safely.
