As an expert, you know exactly what to do. you also know what's best for your client. You also have the character and conviction to do the right thing under any circumstances. Being pragmatic, you know that too much information will confuse the client. The whole truth will terrify them and prevent them from being the change they can be. So you tell them exactly what they need to know, keep their motivation high. Don't hide the problems. Tell it to them, but within the right perspective - the context of business risk - nothing ventured, nothing gained. Assure them about what can be expected from your experience and your ability to pull them out in a worst case scenario. They take some risk, you take some. That's partnership. that's business.

Here's a unique approach I've found effective: I call it the "Trust Triangle." Imagine a triangle with three points: 1. Clarity: Be crystal clear about what you can and cannot discuss. For example, "I can share our overall strategy, but I can't disclose specific financial figures." 2. Confidentiality: Explain why certain information must remain confidential. Perhaps it's to protect competitive advantage or maintain legal compliance. 3. Commitment: Demonstrate your commitment to the client's success, even with limited information sharing. Show how your discretion ultimately benefits them.

Navigating sensitive client discussions while withholding key details requires balancing transparency and confidentiality. One approach is to provide context without disclosing specifics. For example, when discussing a delayed project timeline, I once highlighted potential external risks that could impact delivery, focusing on mitigating factors we were managing. I reassured the client that their project remained a priority without revealing confidential internal challenges. This approach built trust by showing transparency in action, not words, while keeping sensitive information secure. Trust is about showing you have the situation under control, even when full disclosure isn't possible.
