If possible, consider keeping notes to an absolute minimum, or getting rid of notes all together. Peer Specialists are not clinicians and are not required to take notes unless note-taking for billing purposes.

I work in the anti-violence movement as a Peer Supervisor working with survivors of interpersonal violence. With many others, we have moved into this century, 'meeting people where they are at' including person-preferred tech apps and text. One protocol we have added is deleting text messages. We do not record people when we speak verbally and there is no reason to keep texts, keeping them is another form of recording that could put people's safety/privacy at risk.

Many people do not want to meet in what this article describes as "secure". We may meet in a coffee shop or a park. Letting an adult person decide what level of privacy they need for what they want to discuss is more important for Peers. * You want to share your house, your pets, or art while we meet virtually? WOW, thanks for letting me into your life! * You have kids running around and this is the only way you can talk? YES! Look at you, carving out time for yourself in a world full of responsibilities! * You need a "friend" to talk to while you clean, let's talk together and both clean our sacred spaces! Body doubling is a real tool for people with neuro divergency or PTSD.

Be sure to review your state's or community's specific requirements around data, privacy, and reporting for Peer Specialists. Often times laws are written with clinical programming in mind, which can leave Peer Specialists with slightly different requirements. We should always keep confidentiality at the forefront, and we also need to know how the laws affect us.

Have clear rules on what to expect. Develop a group agreement at the start of the session. Talk about confidentiality and the reasons why. Ensure content that is shared stays within the room. Allow people to choose whether they want their camera and / or microphones on or off. Encourage the use of chat or white boards in online meetings. Be clear about the use of mobile phones, email address sharing, social media links etc. Make people feel safe in this space.
