In my experience, socialization with a pen and a whiteboard has always yielded the best results. With the expansion of remote work, the best adaptation has been a digital tablet with any virtual post-it platform that supports doodling, where the experience has been replicated with excellent results.

For graphic design, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator provide powerful editing and vector capabilities, while Figma is my go-to for collaborative UX/UI design. Miro serves as a valuable visual medium for refining concepts in real time with the team, allowing us to iterate seamlessly. Finally, Microsoft Teams or Zoom are essential for remote discussions and presentations, helping us align, gather feedback, and make decisions efficiently. This mix of design software, collaborative platforms, and video conferencing ensures clear communication and successful outcomes.

Recuerdo perfectamente la frase un cliente, además ex consultor de Mckinsey, que me dijo “es tan importante lo que presentas, que cómo lo presentas”. Pequé muchos a?os de darle más importancia al que y no al cómo, dejando la presentación para el final. Y a su vez, la documentación. Ahora, cuando me planifico, cuento sí o sí con el tiempo para pensar cuál es la mejor forma de presentarlo. Entre más estás cercano a ventas, más te das cuenta que una presentación final te puede hacer conectar mejor con tu público y por ende, a vender mejor tu idea. Esto requiere de orden y método. Mi truco siempre, es apuntar cuáles son las ideas principales que quiero compartir y después, revisar varias veces la documentación o la presentación.

Newer tools like Notion have also allowed individuals or teams to make create spaces for things like Design Systems, which previously have been more accessible on prototyping platforms (like Sketch, etc)

In my experience, I found collaborating using Bluebeam internally and externally has been a game changer. Teams can collaborate ever step of the way for documentation or even during the schematic process. It's a great platform!

In my opinion; there’s no ideal tool that could fit all. When we’re looking for an effective tool then we need to decide the uses first. For example the research tools are different from the presentation, so in all cases we need to know for which use are we going to use this platform/ tool.

One aspect to consider is the importance of establishing clear communication channels and protocols within design teams and with clients/stakeholders to ensure effective collaboration and feedback exchange. Additionally, integrating user feedback loops and usability testing methodologies into the design process can help validate design decisions and enhance user satisfaction. Moreover, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement within the design team by encouraging knowledge sharing, attending design conferences, and participating in workshops can lead to innovative solutions and professional growth.

Obviously, it is hard to replace the good old whiteboard, a pack of sticky notes, and a marker. But Lucidchart and Miro saved me tons of time and nerves during the pandemic. I'm using it for mapping and optimizing KPI trees, Flowcharts, Informational Architecture, User Journeys, and Marketing Funnels. I keep my low- and high-fidelity sketches in Figma but sometimes switch them to Sketch or Adobe XD. It depends on the company I'm working in. And it is always helpful to have experience in all three of them. I'm doing essential prototyping in Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD, but I would take Axure RP or Webflow for complex projects. Mostly, all my research protocols are in Google Docs, Spreadsheets, and Slides. And my own notes are in Notion.

Chances are, your client or someone at your organization will have to access your concept/deliverable in the future and they will likely do so with whatever tools the org already has access to. In many cases, this means things like Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, and Google Docs and Slides. Making your materials visually and digitally accessible broadens their reach and makes it easier for future viewers to find, understand and use the information.
