One effective strategy for timing your job applications is to apply as soon as you come across a listing. Occasionally, if a large number of applications are received, the job posting may be removed before the official deadline. Additionally, recruiters often do not extend deadlines, so once they pass, the opportunity to apply may no longer be available.

All to often we may find ourselves misjudging the time we have to accomplish a goal. Such as applying for a role. The role may say we have until a certain date, however, we must keep in mind if the recruiter is receiving more applications than anticipated, they may take the posting down before the deadline. That being said, there is no time like the present. When you see the role immediately start tailoring your resume and gathering any additional items it may request to apply. Procrastination and time are your enemies and may cost you the opportunity, you may be the perfect candidate. Move with purpose to get your application in, however, ensure you are still using spell check and reviewing your work before final submission.

I usually recommend only applying to jobs where you tick off at least 70% - 75% of the job requirements. And instead of sending 50 applications a week, I recommend sending 5-10 and spend 20-40 minutes on each one, personalise the cover letter, tweak your CV (slightly) and take the time to stand out for the RIGHT Reasons!

The approach to click the apply button for every role is not a good one. You will find yourself wasting yours and the recruiters time. Know the organization you applying for, some organizations are good with being partially meeting the requirements and some you MUST meet the requirements, after all it is called a "requirement", because its required. So beware of that companies policies, you may be spinning your wheels if you don't meet the requirement thinking if you meet most of them you are good to go. That being said, when you are going after a role know the organizational policies, and research the roles, know what you are getting into, otherwise you may find its not what you want, and you wasted valuable time.

So go through it, and know what is being asked for, how it is formatted, creating a checklist may not even be a bad idea. This way you can check it off as you get it, and then check it off as it is uploaded. Then you know without a doubt you did everything you were supposed too. You will feel less stress doing it that way, especially if there are a lot of asks for the application.

After you have submitted your application, if you haven’t heard from the recruiter or hiring manager in at least 2 weeks, you should follow up. You can send them something along the lines of: Hi <name of recruiter/ hiring manager>, I am sure you must be extremely busy, but I just wanted to kindly inquire about the status of my application for the <insert position> position at <insert company> which I sent on <insert date>. I was really drawn to this position because <insert reasons>. Please find my CV attached for your reference. If you need any additional information or have any questions, please do let me know. I look forward to hearing from you and appreciate being considered for this position.
