In my conversations with my people leaders, I often respond best when I am provided the background, the issue and the proposed solution succinctly . This prevents any misalignment on the issue at hand. Once this is clear, if all my questions can be answered concisely and with expertise- collaborative decision making is much easier.

Learn to listen. Interaction with seniors means that getting your message across is just a starting point. Regard their questions, observations and criticisms as learning material. Therefore, being a good listener is key. Otherwise, there won't be any serious (future) interaction.

Adapting your communication style for different stakeholders is essential for clarity and understanding. Stakeholders have diverse expertise and experience. You must identify the most effective way to convey your message. Adjusting your approach makes the message relatable and clear. For instance, technical experts appreciate jargon and detailed explanations, while non-technical stakeholders benefit from simplified ideas and a focus on the big picture. Choose the best medium—reports, meetings, or visual presentations—to engage your audience. Understand and adapt to your audience's needs to ensure your message resonates so stakeholders have the information they need to evaluate your recommendations.

To convey your message effectively, avoid times when they’re busy or distracted. Your message should align with what's important to them, like quarterly results or new projects. Tailoring your message increases the chances that it will be heard. Avoid times when they’re overwhelmed. Schedule meetings in advance or choose less hectic times. Respect their time by being concise. Also, be clear about what you need from them; to give them a heads up on an emerging issue, guidance to proceed forward, or their approval on a decision.
