On engaging, the staff have to feel valued and that their opinions matter. They need to be part of the drive for change in policy that you envision to accomplish. This way, the organisation moves in one direction and everyone embraces the new change. Always be open and explain why the new policy is necessary to move the organisation forward ?

Yes I am conducting a series of Brainstorming Sessions on Healthcare4ViksitBharat@2047 through Topic Focused Group Meetings. This shall culminate into a Policy & Vision Document which shall be submitted to State & Central Government authorities of the country.

Engaging staff early with clear, effective communication is key. As caregivers, it’s important understand both the what and the WHY! Unfortunately the why is frequently explained as “because the payer said so” or “because it’s a requirement by CMS or Joint Commission” These really aren’t great reasons to change and certainly do not foster a desire buy in. In my opinion, as a healthcare leader, it’s part of my job to lean into health policy change and try to understand the root cause of the policy. If that root cause can be explained, then change tends to be easier, especially if it is ultimately in the best interest of our patients.

Communication is key in face of any policy change. It’s important to have a communication plan that includes the front line staff - and not only the leadership team - and to provide an open communication channel that people can reach out to, if needed.

However, as I’ve seen all to often in the corporate world, suggestions are rarely acknowledged and essentially falls on deaf ears. Eventually, after ignoring well meaninged opinions, participants stop offering their opinions. During the “changes” each voice is valid and should be taken into account to ensure that the end “product” is truly a team effort and not a preconceived change that has already been decided upon.

In major healthcare policy change or any organizational change, it is also very important to be that "safe space" for the team to bring their concerns to either imagined or real. Change is hard for people, without allowing folks to voice their concerns they end up becoming unintentional usurpers of change because they don't feel included. Nothing wrong with being a cheerleader, but some folks need more than cheers during major policy or structural change, many people need reassurrance that the change will not break them and if it does, they also need to know from leaders that it's okay to share their anxiety during the policy or organizational change. Assurance builds confidence and loyalty, worth the effort as people want to be successful
