I recently had a library patron who wanted to do a career pivot but was not sure of how the resume could be developed. I introduced the person to a Summary section at the top of the resume to highlight the skills developed that could be used in the new career field. I had the individual review LinkedIn profiles of people in their new career choice to identify what skills they noted and achievements they had listed on their profile. This helped the person better understand what would be needed on a resume for their new career field.

Working with students in the journalism program at the Medill School of journalism of Northwestern, I did resume reviews of undergrads with great articles and videos from their internships and class projects. They developed portfolios of their work to show potential employers, but did not hyperlink the website of their portfolio on their resume. So I was able to help them include the link for the portfolio at the top of the resume and get it hyperlinked.

Always consider what the employer wants to see about a candidate on a resume. So in my work recently with a library patron seeking a career pivot, I discussed identifying key words (and what is A.T.S.) from a job description to help craft an effective resume that provides the details requested by the employer. I then encouraged the person to use Jobscan.co as a resource tool to help determine if their resume was providing the detailed information in alignment with the job posting.
