1 Assess Urgency

When the pressure is on, your first step is to assess the urgency of each task. Consider the impact of each item on your list: Will a delay compromise the safety of the cast or crew? Could it potentially derail the entire rehearsal? Tasks that are critical for the rehearsal to proceed should be at the top of your list. Remember, while everything might seem urgent in the moment, distinguishing between what's truly urgent and what's simply important is key to managing your workload during tech rehearsals.

The play is always the thing. As opening night approaches you (as a director) will have to divide time making sure sound and light cues are in the right place and at the right levels....and most importantly you have to make sure the actors feel more confident with their roles, relationships, and the flow of the show. IF the actors feel more confident...their stress level goes down and the show actually moves swifter and with more ease. A line run thru, speed run thru, or technical run thru (where you only focus on the ins and outs of scenes)....all build confidence. When the cast is confident....the story can shine...and the play will be the thing...as it should.

Ideally this all will have been planned for during prep — the light/sound/video designers should have had time in the space with the director to get approval on all of the elements. A “paper tech” of all of the elements together before a cue-to-cue with the actors insures that everything will go smoothly. Lots of time needs to be budgeted for this because it’s all about dialing in as close to a performance level for everything.

Once you've identified the most pressing tasks, it's time to delegate. You can't do everything yourself, so utilize your team effectively. Perfection is a myth, you have to keep moving and improving no matter what. The purpose should always be to keep the show running, without interruptions. Trust me, even a 2-second halt in a live performance hampers the audience’s experience. And a bad experience can lead to audience not understanding the story, which is the worst that can happen to a production. There will always be technical issues sounds, lights and backstage, so you should prepare backups beforehand. Precaution is the way to go in this area.
