How do you manage team conflicts in your innovation process?

There are two types of conflict in product innovation: (1) Disagreements on the destination ('I don't think we need to change', 'Our goals should be different'); and (2) Disagreements on the journey ('This item is a higher priority', 'A different team should handle this'). For both types, it's vital that team members feel enough psychological safety to raise concerns (both the intellectual arguments and the emotional drivers). Diverse opinions make for stronger products. However, you should limit the oxygen given to 'destination' conflicts. Once the team has aired their concerns, draw a line. Innovation requires vision and leadership, not popularity.

Innovation often involves questioning the existing norms and ways, and productive debates and discussions are key to driving this forward. Foster a culture where differing opinions are welcome, while ensuring that discussions remain centered on ideas and processes, not personal criticisms. The "disagree and commit" approach can be valuable, allowing team members to respectfully voice their disagreements and then fully support the final decision once it's made.
