As a startup recruitment director, I find it crucial to have a clear understanding of my goals before embarking on the search for a mentor. It's imperative to define what I want to achieve and learn from the mentorship relationship. Whether I aim to progress in my current role, transition to a different industry or function, or develop specific skills like leadership, negotiation, or diversity and inclusion, having well-defined goals is paramount.

If you're a recruiter in the middle of your career and want some advice, finding a mentor is a good idea. Look around your work friends or past bosses to find someone you like and who knows a lot about recruiting. Ask them politely if they can be your mentor and help you learn. You can also check out mentorship programs or groups for recruiters; they often help people connect with mentors. On websites like LinkedIn, find people who are good at recruiting, talk to them online, and tell them you want to learn from them. Connecting on LinkedIn is a great way to start building a mentor relationship. Remember, it might take a bit of time, so be patient and show you really want to get better at your job.

A key to remember is that you are working off of their availability / schedule vs. yours. It is your duty to cater to them, as they are helping you. They are devoting their time to you. You are the one with the ask, not them. Also, when reaching out to a potential mentor, make sure that you have some rapport / prior relationship vs. a complete cold-reach out. Maybe that person doesn't vibe with you or maybe they don't pass along their knowledge / ideas to a complete stranger. Be respectful if they say no too - not everyone is willing to mentor or share their playbook on how they have built their successful career.

A great mentor is someone you can always bounce ideas or address concerns with even if they aren't working with you. A mentor will tell you yes that's a great idea or no that's not a good idea.

There's so much to learn (to do things really well) and the internal echo-chamber can be prohibitive. Read, research, ask, listen, be curious. Also, share-back - you gain from giving and learn more about yourself and others in doing so. Win:win, right.
