1 Set clear goals

Before you start your mentorship, you should have a clear idea of what you want to achieve from it. What are your learning objectives, career aspirations, and personal challenges? How can your mentor help you reach them? Write down your goals and share them with your mentor. This will help you both align your expectations, track your progress, and adjust your plan as needed.

Before one approaches a mentor, one should be willing to go with a black slate. If someone has a certain pre conceived notion, there might be a conflict in understanding. One seeks mentorship, because s/he knows he or she is good at what they do. They do have a high level of expertise in that particular field. One only needs to write down what they really want from this mentorship. What is that they would be with a gap of three months, six months, and one year.

2 Seek feedback

One of the benefits of having a mentor is getting honest and constructive feedback on your performance, skills, and behaviors. Feedback can help you identify your strengths and areas for improvement, as well as learn from your mistakes and successes. Don't be afraid to ask your mentor for feedback regularly, and be open to receiving it. Listen carefully, ask questions, and thank your mentor for their input. Then, act on the feedback by implementing the suggestions, practicing the skills, or changing the habits that need improvement.

3 Be curious

Your mentor is a valuable source of knowledge, experience, and insight. You can learn a lot from them by being curious and asking questions. Don't limit yourself to topics related to your work or goals. You can also ask your mentor about their career journey, their challenges and achievements, their values and principles, their role models and inspirations, and their advice and recommendations. By being curious, you can expand your perspective, discover new possibilities, and deepen your relationship with your mentor.

4 Take initiative

Your mentor is not there to do the work for you or tell you what to do. You are the driver of your own learning and development. Therefore, you need to take initiative and show your commitment and enthusiasm for your mentorship. Don't wait for your mentor to contact you or assign you tasks. Instead, reach out to them regularly, propose ideas and projects, seek opportunities and challenges, and report your results and reflections. By taking initiative, you can demonstrate your proactivity, creativity, and accountability.

5 Reflect and apply

Your mentorship is not only a learning experience, but also an opportunity to apply what you learn to your work and life. To make the most of your mentorship, you need to reflect on your experiences and lessons, and integrate them into your practice and behavior. After each session with your mentor, take some time to review what you discussed, what you learned, and what you need to do next. Then, put your learning into action by applying the concepts, skills, or strategies that you learned. By reflecting and applying, you can reinforce your learning, improve your performance, and grow as a servant leader.

I had an excellent group of people who mentored me though becoming a more effective Servant Leader. When I entered into this process I ensured to have an open mind and be willing to change as needed. I had to be willing to take a look at myself through others eyes and evaluate my own actions, words, and concepts to ensure they were truly inline with the idea of Servant Leadership.
