1 Drill bit types

Forstner bits are cylindrical with a rim and center point, ideal for creating clean and flat-bottomed holes in wood and hard materials. Hole saws are circular blades that attach to a drill to cut out large holes in various materials, while masonry bits have a carbide tip and fluted shaft for drilling into concrete, brick, stone, and other masonry materials; they require a hammer drill for the pounding action needed to break through the material.

2 Drill bit sizes

When selecting a drill bit for your project, you must consider the size of the bit, which will determine the diameter of the hole. Something not mentioned is using a sharp drill bit. Drill bits get dull and often need to be sharpened, the same way a knife needs to be sharpened. This can be done by hand or with special tools.

3 Drill bit materials

When selecting a drill bit, it's important to consider the material it is made of. High-speed steel (HSS) is the most widely used material and is suitable for drilling most metals, wood, and plastic. Cobalt is an alloy that is added to HSS to increase its hardness and heat resistance, making it ideal for drilling hard and abrasive metals. Titanium is a material that is coated on HSS to improve its durability and corrosion resistance, making it good for drilling soft and non-ferrous metals. Carbide is an extremely hard and durable material, but also very brittle and expensive, making it suitable for making the tips of masonry bits and some other specialized bits.

To choose the right material for your drill bit, you need to consider the hardness and abrasiveness of the material you are drilling, the speed and pressure you are applying, and the frequency and duration of your drilling. Tooling is in a constant state of change. If you have any doubts about the tooling you need to make a hole contact your suppliers or manufatures. They will have options for your job and budget. They will also have the information on correct feed and speed rates. Some times higher quality (which can mean higher price) can save money and time in the long run.
