Also, manager need to provide clear expectations, goals, and feedback to keep everyone aligned and motivated. In times of increasing digitalisation, there are more and more opportunities to get in touch with employees remotely and promote mutual exchange. With fixed check-ins, regular feedback and the joint development of a personal development roadmap, remote employees also feel well looked after. Regular group dialogue is also important to strengthen team spirit. If possible, occasional days or workshops in person are of course a successful addition. Most important, however, is trust. If someone is hired as a remote employee, we have to trust that they will work productively and with motivation, even at a distance.

In my experience being accessible to every team member is a great enabler. Set out clear headline goals and expectations. Daily connect calls with regional team leaders or entire team will help stay on course. Don't get lazy with your communication. Instant message services and emails are all part and parcel of modern working life, but they shouldn't replace picking up the phone and your regular 1:1's, camera on! You might think checking-in with a daily/weekly message is cutting it - it isn't! Prioritize your contact time with your team, make it a non-negotiable in your diary and where moving it cannot be avoided, reschedule it immediately or it will never happen. So much is lost in written communication and there is a level of trust that can only be developed through eye contact, even over a screen. Finally, don't avoid the difficult conversations because you can email or IM instead. Would you do this in the office environment?

Something I’ve found helpful has been to set aside more time for 1:1s with remote team members compared to in person team members. Folks that you are colocated with can swing by your desk or grab you for a coffee at any time - it’s much easier to seek feedback or get guidance informally and in real time. To ensure a similar quality of interactions with your remote team - put in the time at dedicated touch points. You’ll have a better sense of what’s happening and be able to provide stronger support that way.

Especially when working remotely, people's efforts and attempts may sometimes not be visible enough. Of course, although this is not only valid when working remotely, it is very important to recognize the work done and express it, especially in joint meetings. Else the locations with more in-person engagement will overshadow those who are remote ultimately making them feel isolated even if they are satisfied in the job per se. Remote or in-house Trust is the glue for engaging with Team. As a leader one should be engaged so to contribute proactively in team engagement through various learning intervention. Once they are part of Team, means they have qualified all necessary functional n behavioural stretches, before getting into Team, believe them ...trust them. Seek their inputs feedback...always be communicative ...rest will definitely fall in place.

My recommendation is to eliminate the word "remote" from your company's vocabulary. It makes people feel like they are somehow less valuable. I suggest changing the language to: virtual leader, team and employee/colleague. We don't call employees that commute to work "commuters"....we call them employees....ha! How you get to work, shouldn't matter, right? With the language change it changes the picture in peoples' minds and then create goals objectives and guidelines for your virtual team members.
