You're managing a film production. How can you relay producer feedback to the director smoothly?

A Producer is involved in a project as much as the director, but when it comes to creative calls the final call rests with the director. The producer should be in discussion and involved completely in the creative outputs before the film goes on the shooting floor. Once it's on the floor it's always the director's call. What the producer needs to do is keep a close watch to make sure the creative output is as per what's agreed upon and within budget limits. If there are any upswings in the area it's the producer's responsibility to make the Director aware of the same at the very moment it's visible which would help the director take calls to control the same.

Often people do not articulate what they want well. It is important to ask questions about the feedback and suggest some alternatives in order to better understand what they want. Always start giving feedback with a positive. Usually there is more positive to say than negative, and that is a good place to start. Most things are subjective and with some tweaks common ground can be found.

Communication is key, to working with the Director, understanding the vision as a team deliver what can be done and making sure the Director is aware of any limits within the budget. Anything is possible in production our Job as producer is to predict, solve and deliver. being a producer As I am aware that I am the person who is putting money and I am who is approaching a director I will see Directors past projects his execution of projects and how much the project earned, how comfortable the director is working in constraints if any... How comfortable he is with a team of professionals who are different in their capacity.. how the director communicate with his team and as well as with actors and most important execution of the contents compare the script and the final product, Directors knowledge of visualisation and above all knowledge of camera lenses and editing. There are many points we can add but for me this is sufficient.

If a director feels the Production manager is placing him or herself between the two pillars of production as as the relayer and conveyer of the producer's will it would be easy for the director to feel usurped or view me as a competitive challenger for influence and now has me going up hill when relaying a producers feed back over potentially contentious internal noise of your director to your director will create friction disturbances in the the force and flow of collaborative art forms. Honestly, establishing an understanding between all the workers tackling the project is of main importance. When operating my own projects, I make sure it’s known to be open to ideas and respectful to responses and feedback you get because we all can learn and build off each other. Ego gets in the way a lot with wanting to make your own vision come to life but if create an environment where everyone feels like they have a voice, it would be easier to approach someone with feedback and potentially work out a new vision or give understanding as to why such feedback is brought up or spoken of. It’s all about establishing a strong foundation at the beginning.

Have an open pre production meeting BEFORE the shoot with all key stakeholders so the director is fully engaged with what their role is - plus agree on cast, genre, style, budget issues (lose costly scenes?), target audience, age appropriate etc - not during the edit or feedback screening

The project/creative work takes priority over all else. So techniques/ideas that may sound great in isolation might not work for what the project actually needs. In essence if all contributors and parts of the team work together in ensuring the end product's cohesiveness and creative goal is preserved, I would consider it a successful project.

Knowing how to approach the director respectively and lay-out the concerns of the producer and what exactly producer wants. Because mostly a producer will dishout problems without stating what he wants which resulted in creating a circle of complaints without progress.

I think the most important thing for all of these tips to be effective is to establish CLEAR expectations from the very beginning of the project. Once production starts it can be really tough to give feedback that someone wasn’t mentally prepared to receive. But people tend to be receptive when it’s something they knew they would get feedback on. Also having an official meeting to give feedback with a clear agenda after production wraps is always helpful.
