Building trust with skeptical stakeholders during an emergency requires transparency, steady communication, and credibility. I start by being upfront about the situation—sharing facts, realistic timelines, and potential risks without sugarcoating. Regular updates keep everyone informed, even if there’s no major change. Acknowledging concerns and backing decisions with data or proven strategies helps address doubts and build confidence. Over time, consistent and clear communication shows that I’m leading with a structured, informed approach, which tends to foster trust and buy-in, even with initially skeptical stakeholders.

By saying what you know and by knowing what you say. Particularly in emergencies, people immediately know the difference between bullshit and truthfulness.

No one cares about your accolades, especially those being negatively impacted by an emergency. Put down the "Boss" hat and let's put our listening ears on. The concerns presented may be valid or they may be imagines. Either way it is the True Leader's responsibility to encourage an open, respectful dialogue in order to air grievances. One the issues are out there they can be addressed one by one. Most of the time the public just wants to bend the ear of someone in power. Do yourself, and the team, a favor and give it to them. Both sides will be appreciative of your demeanor.

In crisis situations, I’ve found that honest, open communication is highly effective in building trust, especially by delivering timely and relevant information. Empathy also plays a key role; by listening to their concerns and demonstrating that I understand their perspective, I can alleviate some of their doubts. Additionally, presenting a clear, practical action plan shows that the situation is being managed effectively, directly boosting their trust
