If you are managing data stakeholders, Emotional Intelligence would be a critical skill. The data stakeholders would either be application custodian (responsible person/team), process custodian (like responsible for order to cash process) etc; these individuals would not be reporting to you, and they would have their own priorities. Leveraging your emotional intelligence skills you would need to involve them in your projects and initiatives, and drive joint success for them and for you; and hence for the organization.

On the other hand, self regulation is very important. How do you deal effectively with stakeholders. We have different kind of humans with various characteristics. Your ability to manage your impulse is key. You can not be efficient if you relate without being obvious to the surrounding situations and environmental factors. You are liaising with stakeholders who would be giving their time and effort in what they hope to achieve, your ability to see through their lens is key. Respect people perspective. You don't necessarily need to accept all but appreciate the effort.

I try to see what the other person is saying , what is the root of conversation , whether he is just saying things to level up or whether it is out of trust or lack of trust, Why is he saying this, what biases he may have, where is he coming from, Am i biased or am i active listening, When you hear from a perspective of data, you need to understand the hidden message, thats where EI comes in.

Listen more speak less, be straight to the point. Focus on the crux of the matter and not the story and jargon built around it, Most times I Have gotten honest and workable solutions when i have asked "So what is your point here" "how do you want to go about this" " what do you want me to do" "how can i help you" Ok "so i get it, now tell me what is the blocker for you" "With all said and done, Why are we here now " "Awesome now tell me what works best for you" Listen more and they will give you all the answers. You will be amazed how quickly they give it to you
