You're managing a construction project. How can you avoid design changes derailing your timeline?
Staying ahead of design changes requires foresight and flexibility. To navigate this challenge:
- Engage in thorough pre-planning . Include buffer periods for potential revisions .
- Establish clear communication channels between all stakeholders to quickly address issues.
- Implement a change control process to evaluate the impact of design changes efficiently.

I see designing, BIM, and CAD as necessary for addressing and leveraging all the services and tools to build a more resilient and sustainable future that advances realtime data collaboratively and in more iterative ways. Without these tools in place design changes will impact project timelines and delay communication channels between stakeholders.

To keep design changes from delaying your project, start by making sure everyone agrees on the design before work begins. Stay in regular contact with your team and the client to spot any issues early. Set up a clear process for handling changes, so every request is checked for how it will affect time, cost, and quality. It's also helpful to plan some extra time in your schedule for surprises and keep your timeline flexible to handle small changes without?major?delays.

To avoid design changes derailing your timeline, ensure thorough planning and communication during the initial design phase. Involve all stakeholders early to finalize requirements and reduce late revisions. Implement a change control process to assess the impact of any requested changes on time and cost. Establish clear deadlines for design approvals and make contingency plans to manage unavoidable changes without major disruptions. Regular updates help prevent surprises and keep the project on track.

When managing construction projects, it’s crucial to align the build with your client’s vision while critically examining the project. By identifying any discrepancies in the architectural, engineering, or specification documents that don’t work well together early on, you can flag issues before they turn into a variation Understanding the client’s Vision allows you to ensure the project reflects it while addressing potential design or construction problems early, helps prevent delays. Clear communication and proper documentation of changes are key to keeping the project on track and minimizing disruptions.

Never let someone waste your time twice to play with timeline. No need to fight on design issues to derail project– even when your design is better than others. Remember, in the war of ego, the loser always wins. Any Project Manager must keep the hat turn around 360 degrees, especially when design changes keep the project “under construction” for unlimited timeframe. Make your mind as visual designer, so think wisely about design and its complexity. It’s my advice to understand dynamic nature of the design process at very initial stage. There are interdependence of various participating entities, and a high degree of coordination. I suggest IT has great potential in the design phase of project to avoid changes and delays. MAK
