I use Jira for technical documentation project management. In doing so, I use two Jira boards: - I use the Jira timeline board to create Agile Epics that correspond to each major topic to document. At the beginning of the release cycle for an SaaS enterprise platform, I create one Epic for each new feature or improvement that Product Management and Engineering teams are building for that release. Within each Epic, I create Tasks for documentation work as well as Story Points for each Task. I consult the team to set Story Points. - I use a Kan Kan board to plan our two-week Sprint. In my experience; project leaders should do three things with dashboards for agile projects. Train your team on the tool. Make sure all user stories, bugs, and defects are entered into the tool. Lastly, review the dashboard in standup, status and portfolio meetings to manage progress, backlog and sprints.

I found on a huge project we were doing, that trying to fit into the agile tradition of epic/ story/ task on Jira, wasnt giving us enough wiggle room in the task hierarchy. As a team we agreed to use task types, "initiatives" to group large components of work. As a result, we are better able to identify and refine our other chunks of work using the epic/ story/ task/sub-task heirarchy but still have a clear oversight on the progress of the end goal ( which is stipulated in the hierarchy)
